Prayer Basics

Prayer, called Salah, is one of the most important things a Muslim must do. Muslims pray every day to remember Allah and stay connected to Him.

Each prayer is made of small sections called rakʿat (one is called a rakʿah). A rakʿah is one unit of prayer. It includes standing, bowing, and prostrating while saying certain words.

There are five mandatory prayers every day, and each prayer has a certain number of rakʿat.

Morning prayer (Fajr) requires 2 rakʿat.

Afternoon prayer #1 (Dhuhr) requires 4 rakʿat.

Afternoon prayer #2 (Asr) requires 4 rakʿat.

After sunset prayer #1 (Maghrib) requires 3 rakʿat.

Evening prayer (Isha) requires 4 rakʿat.

Each prayer must be done at certain times during the day. These times change depending on where you live. You can check the prayer times by asking a local mosque or searching online for the prayer times in your city, I personally reccomend downloading the app "Shia+" for finding this time; it is international.

Some prayers can also be prayed back-to-back. For example, Dhuhr and Asr can be prayed together, and Maghrib and Isha can also be prayed together. Fajr is prayed by itself.
